Sirenia se formó a principios de 2001 en Noruega cuando Morten Veland se alejó de su anterior banda Tristania debido a desacuerdos musicales y problemas personales, Morten Veland también incluyó en este proyecto a Kristian Gundersen en las voces masculinas limpias y en la guitarra, Henriette Bordvik en la voz, y en la batería a Jonathan Perez.
Sirenia practica una mezcla de Gothic Metal y Rock con influencias clásicas adicionados con elementos de Black y Death metal.
